Hemp Oil May Help You Sleep

Hemp Oil May Help You Sleep

Hemp Oil May Help You Sleep

Hemp Oil compounds interact with your endocannabinoid system, which helps your body maintain a state of stability, balance and/or homeostasis.

Hemp Oils arn't psychoactive, meaning it won't get you "high."  Rather, it has a range of health applications and some research suggests that Hemp Oil can also help you get a good night's sleep.

What Causes You to Sleep Badly?

Many things can cause you to sleep badly.  According to the Mayo Clinic, insomnia can be caused by:

  • mental health disorders, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression
  • medication, which can disturb your sleep-wake cycle
  • physical conditions, such as chronic pain and restless leg syndrome
  • caffeine, especially when consumed late in the day
  • environmental factors, such as loud noises or an uncomfortable bed

How Hemp Oils Might Help With Sleep

People are now turning to Hemp Oils to help with sleep: Almost 80% of Americans say they have trouble sleeping at least once a week, according to another recent nationally representative CR survey of 1,267 U.S. adults.

There is a small, but growing body of scientific research that provides support for Hemp Oils as a sleep aid.

A recent study, suggests Hemp Oil might help people with short-term sleep problems.

Joseph Maroon, M.D., a clinical professor and neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center who has researched the effect of cannabis on the brain, says that Hemp Oil has properties that could improve people's sleep.  Most notably, he says, it appears to ease anxiety and pain, both of which can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep.

Another way Hemp Oil may improve one's ability to sleep is by easing anxiety.  In a study in the January issue of the Permanente Journal, published by the Kaiser-Permanente health insurance company, Colorado researchers looked at the health records of 72 patients who were treated with Hemp Oils for either anxiety or poor sleep.

Scientists have some biological explanations for how Hemp Oil may affect both sleep and anxiety.  Recent studies have shown that cannabis compounds interact with receptors throughout the body - the so-called endocannabinoid system - including in the brain.  At least one of those types of receptors is thought to affect the body's sleep/wake cycle, offering one explanation for how Hemp Oil could affect sleep directly.  And Hemp Oils also interacts with another receptor in the brain that researchers have linked to anxiety.

Things to Consider

Hemp Oil may work better for anxiety than sleep.  There's more evidence for Hemp Oil's ability to ease your anxiety than to help you fall asleep, though helping you relax could help you sleep, too.

Look for quality products.  Some studies suggest that many Hemp Oil products don't; have what they claim or are contaminated with pesticides or other harmful substances.

Use it safely.  last, talk with your doctor - especially if you take other meds - because Hemp Oil may interact with medications.
